Carl Schultz, Faculty Recital

One of only 5 Jazz musicians to ever appear on the cover of Time magazine, Thelonious Monk was truly an innovator.  While heavily influenced by Harlem Stride pianists and Duke Ellington, Monk developed a unique approach to the piano that make him identifiable after a few moments of listening.  As a composer he introduced new sounds to the harmonic language of Jazz and was one of the most influential musicians in the Bebop movement.  In this recital saxophonist Carl Schultz, drummer Isaac Schwartz, and organist Ian McArdle will explore Monk's music and perform works from his oeuvre that are less commonly performed.
